How to Set Habits that Stick

One of my value driven resolutions for 2024 is to set the habit of writing my ‘to do’ list for work as the first thing I do in the morning before starting any other work tasks (e.g. checking my email etc). Now I’ve told myself this before……….and failed.
Habits are the invisible architects of our daily lives, shaping our actions, choices, and ultimately, our destinies. Whether we’re striving for personal growth, professional success, or a healthier lifestyle, understanding the science and psychology behind habits can be a game-changer.
There are lots of great books and research on how to form and maintain habits. Some key takeouts are below:
- Identify Your Cues: Recognize the triggers that prompt your habits. Whether it’s a specific time, location, or emotional state, understanding your cues is the first step.
- Define Your Rewards: Determine the rewards that reinforce your habits. Celebrate achievements, no matter how small, to create positive associations:
- Choose Positive Routines: Replace negative routines with positive ones that align with your goals. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable steps.
- Integrate Habit Stacking: Seamlessly incorporate new habits into existing routines. This enhances the likelihood of consistency and success.
- Leverage Keystone Habits: Identify and focus on keystone habits that can trigger positive changes in multiple areas of your life.
- Optimise Your Environment: Adjust your surroundings to facilitate positive behaviors and minimize obstacles to change.
- Be Patient and Consistant: Understand that habit formation takes time. Be patient, stay consistent, and celebrate your progress along the way
So in my example, its morning. I sit down at my desk (Cue) and I’m keen to get going and make the most out of the time I have. One other thing I always do at about this time is have a coffee (current routine and potential reward). Therefore I am going to commit to not taking a sip of my coffee until I have written my top 3 priorities for the day (and three only – making the habit small and achievable). I will let you know how I go.
Of course, the best habits and the ones that are most likely to stick and to have the biggest impact are those that are moving you towards your values.
